People always ask me where I get the time to keep writing books, given my hectic schedule. My response is simple – I don’t wait for perfect conditions. I realised a long time ago that perfect conditions never exist. Before, I would keep procrastinating with the hope that someday, when it is less hectic, I would finally get a chance to open my laptop and get on with my book writing project. That day never came.

Most of my books are written while I’m in the bank queue, or waiting for someone at a restaurant or waiting at the airport. I have learnt not to waste time while waiting for perfect conditions.

Most of us will be far ahead in life was it not for the fact that we were still waiting for conditions to be conducive before we could finally launch that project, write that book or register for that qualification. We spent a great amount of time rationalising,  and in the process came up with all sorts of excuses.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 says “If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done”. Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. Sometimes we cite the lack of resources or time for not taking action. I have learnt that you just have to start with whatever resources you have at your disposal, the time you have and the people you have access to. You may find that as you take the first step, things just unexpectedly fall into place.

You could be having an idea that the world has long been waiting for. You could be someone’s breakthrough. Your taking action could open doors for many people. So, you could be delaying not just yourself but others as well. You could be one of the top academics, business people, lawyers or musicians that your country has ever produced.

Progress tends to attract more progress. As you take action, you could be creating an environment for many other breakthroughs. The things you are worried about could sort themselves out along the way. It won’t happen if you are still rationalising and over-analysing.

There is a big difference between planning and being paralysed by an over-analysis syndrome.

Things happen to those who take action and not those who wait, wait and wait for the perfect weather.
